Discover Traditional Instruments
Bridging Asian and Canadian cultures through sound
“Discover Traditional Instruments” is an educational and cultural initiative by the Canadian Asian Music Society (CAMS), dedicated to introducing audiences to the unique soundscapes and histories of traditional instruments from across Asia and beyond.
Through this ongoing video series, experienced musicians and instructors present in-depth introductions to a variety of traditional instruments—sharing their origins, cultural significance, playing techniques, and how they continue to evolve and inspire artists today. From the soulful melodies of the Ney and Erhu to the rhythmic energy of the Tabla and Taiko drums, this series offers a window into the diverse musical heritage of different communities.
Whether you’re a musician, music student, educator, or simply curious about global music traditions, Discover Traditional Instruments invites you to listen, learn, and connect with the stories behind the sounds.
At CAMS, we believe that music is a powerful way to celebrate cultural identity and promote understanding across borders. This project supports our mission to preserve, share, and celebrate the beauty of traditional music in a modern, accessible format.
