Persian Ney Workshop

Techniques and Improvisation

In this workshop, we will focus on the techniques required to produce the unique and expressive sounds of the Persian ney, particularly in its characteristic classical style. The session will cover fundamental techniques such as proper ney posture, correct fingerings, tonguing, and breathing methods.

Designed for participants with basic ney knowledge, this workshop also offers valuable insights for advanced players looking to refine their skills in the Persian style. Together, we will explore various dastgahs (Persian musical modes) and gushehs (smaller melodic units within a dastgah) from the Persian Radif (the complete modal system). Additionally, we will delve into improvisation techniques within this framework, enhancing your ability to express yourself musically.

By the end of this workshop, you will gain a deeper understanding of the Persian ney’s distinct style and develop practical tools to continue improving your playing technique and musical expression.
